Worldwide Leadership Training Meeting February 9, 2008

The Worldwide Leadership Training Meeting on February 9, 2008 will be broadcast over the Church satellite system to meetinghouses around the world. See the online broadcast schedule.

On LDS.org: Audio, video, and text files will be placed online a week or so after the broadcast.

A booklet will be prepared with the proceedings and will be sent to subscribers of the Ensign and Liahona magazines in the following languages: Cambodian, Cebuano, Chinese, Danish, Dutch, English, Finnish, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Mongolian, Norwegian, Portuguese, Russian, Samoan, Spanish, Swedish, Tagalog, Thai, Tongan, and Ukranian. Ensign subscribers will receive the booklet with their June magazine; mailings with the Liahona will depend on the time it takes for translation and may be sent at a later date. This is great news, as there wasn’t a DVD sent last year (or did we miss out?).

I see that booklets of the 2006 training on “Supporting the Family” is still available from http://www.ldscatalog.com, but am I right in thinking that 2007’s “Teaching and Learning” was only published in the June 2007 Ensign?

President Packer made a comment about “common sticks” during the leadership training this morning.  A story from his writings gives great meaning to that comment.  It might be added as a footnote in the forthcoming booklet.

“On one occasion, Karl G. Maeser was leading a party of young missionaries across the Alps.  As they reached the summit, he looked back and saw a row of sticks thrust into the snow to mark the one safe path across the otherwise treacherous glacier.

“Halting the company of missionaries, he gestured toward the sticks and said,  ’ Brethren, there stands the priesthood [of God].  They are just common sticks like the rest of us,… but the position they hold makes them what they are to us.  If we step aside from the path they mark, we are lost.’ ”

The above story is found in Alma P. Burton, Karl G. Maeser, Mormon Educator, Salt Lake City: Deseret Book Co., 1953, p. 22; as quoted by Boyd K. Packer, in “From Such Turn Away,” Ensign, May 1985, p.33; see also Boyd K. Packer, “Follow the Brethren,” Speeches of the Year, BYU, 23 March 1965, p. 1–10; as reprinted in Tambuli, Sept. 1979, p.53; and Boyd K. Packer, “The Spirit Beareth Record,” Ensign, June 1971, p.87.

The text from last year’s Worldwide Leadership Training meeting was printed in the Ensign and Liahona, but not published as a separate booklet. No DVD was issued. All the text, audio, and video is available online in the Gospel Library > Additional Addresses.
