Young Single Adult Articles in the Ensign

The Ensign magazine is including more articles for young single adults. The August 2008 issue contains a mini-package of articles for unmarried Church members who are between 18 and 30.  Learn more about this issue at Mormon Magz.

Coloring Pages from The Friend Magazine

The Friend has posted a gallery of its recent coloring pages, arranged by topic. This will be a welcomed resource for Primary leaders and teachers, as well as parents looking for activities for their children to do during sacrament meeting, stake conference, general conference, or a long drive.

Thanks to the MormonMagz blog for pointing this out.

True to the Faith Booklet

The True to the Faith booklet is an excellent resource for youth and adults. This Church publication takes a topic-by-topic approach with simple explanations of gospel subjects. It was designed to be especially mindful of youth, young single adults, and new converts. The 190-page booklet contains approximately 170 entries on topics listed alphabetically from Aaronic Priesthood to Zion. In addition to teaching gospel principles in a simple yet inspiring way, each entry also contains scriptural references for further study of any topic. In the introduction, the First Presidency states that the underlying purpose of the publication is to help all readers strengthen their efforts “to draw near to the Savior and follow His example.”

In 2004, they were sent to each ward with instructions to provide them to all youth and new converts. As a bishop, I make sure that every new young woman and young man in my ward receives a copy of the booklet.

True to the Faith is available online in text and PDF formats or you can order a printed copy for US$2.00 at LDSCatalog.com. The book is published in 46 languages.

For personel examples of families and youth using True to the Faith, see the news item in the Around the Church section of LDS.org

In 2004, True to the Faith became an official part of the missionary library, along with Preach My Gospel.

The Only True God and Jesus Christ

On the Church’s site on Jesus Christ, read a powerful new article from a modern apostle Elder Jeffrey R. Holland testifying of Jesus Christ. While there, but sure to watch the video by clicking the link in the left column.

MormonMagz Blog About Church Magazines

Check out the Mormon Magz blog to learn more about the magazines of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The purpose of Mormon Magzs is to encourage people to read the magazines by helping them see how the Church magazines are fulfilling their mission to “help individuals and families stay closer to the Lord” and “help build…testimony and offer aid in coping with the problems of the world.”

Mormon Magz is not an official blog of the Church. Its founder began the blog to help “counter some of the misperceptions about the magazines among those in the online chattering class who seem to seldom actually read them. As the First Presidency promised in 1971, the magazines ‘can be a great influence for good if you will read [them]‘ (emphasis added).”

Scriptures Online in Danish, Dutch, and Hungarian

We are pleased to announce that the electronic texts of the Danish, Dutch, and Hungarian triple combination of the scriptures are now available online on the Church’s scriptures Web site at the following addresses:

This brings the total number of languages on the Church’s scriptures Web site to nine. To help more members have access to the scriptures, the Church has previously placed English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish versions of the triple online. The LDS scriptures are currently being converted for use online in more than two dozen additional languages.

The online triple combination provides footnotes, study helps, maps, photographs, and the ability to mark scriptures.

Pearl of Great Price Sudoku

The New Era has posted an online version of the Pearl of Great Price Sudoku puzzle from the July issue. Instead of numbers, this puzzle uses words from Moses 1:39. When you finish the puzzle, you’ll probably know that scripture pretty well if you don’t already.

This is intended to be something fun for kids or teens, but regardless of your age, you may find yourself determined to solve it once you’ve started.

New LDS Gems Web Site

In the past, LDS.org offered the ability for people to subscribe to receive by e-mail inspirational quotes in the following categories: Church History Gems, Daily Gems, Family Gems, Young Single Adult Gems, and Youth Gems.

An archive of all these inspirational quotes has now been created in the LDS.org Gospel Library at gems.lds.org. You can now subscribe by either e-mail or RSS subscriptions.

Existing LDS Gems subscribers will need to resubscribe to one of the new methods by the end July 2008. To do this, please go to gems.lds.org and click “Subscribe to RSS” or “Subscribe to E-Mail” for each type of Gem you would like to receive. All old subscriptions will be terminated in August 2008. (During this interim period, you may receive two gems per day, one from the old software and one from the new.)

Thank you for subscribing to LDS Gems and please let your friends know about it!

More Video on LDS.org, Including Flash for Download

We have just released some new video on videos.lds.org

  1. Two new video segments from Elder Holland under the Frequently Asked Questions heading regarding what we believe about the Savior and continuing revelation. The segment about the Savior can also be found as a streamed element on jesuschrist.lds.org.
  2. All the language video that has been converted and provided to this point.
  3. Flash video for download. This is first time we’ve provided Flash for download, which is now possible because of Adobe’s recently-released offline video player called Adobe Media Player, which enables a user to download and view flash video offline.

We realize the video page is rather clunky. It is scheduled to be rebuilt later this year.

July Ensign Now Online

The July 2008 issue of the Ensign is now online. (Remember, you can view the full magazine layout in PDF format by clicking “View” on the format bar.)

This is the special issue that David Frischknecht recently blogged about. Find out how to join the online conversation about the Church by reading Elder M. Russell Ballard’s advice on “Sharing the Gospel Using the Internet.”

After reading the article, you may want to consider the following ways to share the gospel online:

  1. Blog what you’ve learned and how you know. Start a blog, then write what you learn in Church or in your scripture study, or explain how living the Gospel has blessed your life.
  2. Post your testimony online. Write your testimony or conversion story then post it on a personal blog, Web site, or one of the many LDS-oriented sites. Then do it again in your mission language.
  3. Comment on existing blogs. Well-known blogs on religious topics, such as the On Faith blog at newsweek.washingtonpost.com are great places to share your beliefs because people of many faiths participate there.
  4. Post a video on a video sharing Web site. Join the ranks of thousands who have shared their testimonies and stories by video. Perhaps you could video tape your parents or grandparents and capture their stories too. While there, rate and comment on other good videos you find.
  5. Post mission and wedding photos on photo sharing sites. Why not share photos from your mission, your wedding, or your family home evening at the park? Be sure to comment about them as well.
  6. Edit entries in online encyclopedias. After signing up for a free account, you can edit or create articles immediately. Be sure that entries on gospel topics are accurate and positive. If you speak a foreign language, even better to do it in that language!
  7. Link to good Web sites. If you have a Web site or blog, create a link to other good Web sites. You can also link to Church sites. For example, link to your favorite talk at LDS.org or your favorite video at videos.lds.org. Link to the Gospel Topics section in the Gospel Library that has great answers to common questions, or to other key sites, such as JesusChrist.lds.org or the Church’s site on Joseph Smith.
  8. Volunteer with a community group of members. Volunteer your talents in graphic design, programming, writing, translation, or videography.

“…the people began to be astonished, seeing there was more than one witness who testified…” (Alma 10:12)

New Meetinghouse Locator on LDS.org - Beta Release

LDS.org has a Meetinghouse Locator application that allows users to enter an address to find the nearest LDS meetinghouse. We are pleased to announce the beta release of an upgraded version of the meetinghouse locator application on LDS.org at maps.lds.org.

This application provides many new features not available in the existing application, including:

  • A dynamic user interface. (No more drop-down lists!)
  • The ability to identify the closest meetinghouses and congregations worldwide.
  • The ability to enter address information or simply point at a location on a map to get information.
  • The ability to switch between map providers Google and Microsoft to get the best map for a given location.
  • The ability to switch between map and aerial/satellite views.
  • The ability to see all congregations at a location, not just the residential unit (for example, Young Single Adult wards and language wards).
  • The ability to select a ward/branch and get additional information, go to the unit Web site, or get driving directions.
  • The ability to provide robust feedback that can identify a variety of issues that can be tracked more easily.
  • The ability to send a link to a friend of a location.

Please feel free to try this new application and share it with your friends and neighbors.  Feedback, suggestions, and corrections are welcomed and encouraged by using the Feedback link on the application.
